From the Desk of Mrs. Karen Rose, SMS Principal…

With the class size ratio being a school priority, the staff at Sarasota Middle School has been busy finalizing plans for the 2010 – 2011 school year. Math teachers will be working off team providing instruction to their respective grade level interdisciplinary teams. Language arts, science and social studies teachers will continue to be clustered as an interdisciplinary team in a small learning community. Math teachers will have an opportunity to team by grade level and take full advantage of planning together and continuing to develop as a professional math learning community.

SMS teachers have been busy generating ideas that will intrigue our middle school students. With the hustle and bustle of generating plans, interdisciplinary teams have moved away from the traditional SMS team names and moved into academy identities.

We are very excited about the upcoming school year. We have invested countless hours developing class schedules for our students. As has been the practice, every attempt has been made to utilize input from teachers and parents, keep legislatively required classes at a ratio of 22 to 1, and match teaching and learning styles.

Students will receive their academy assignment for the 2010 – 2011 school year in early July. Please have a safe and restful summer. We are looking forward to seeing you in August!

CONGRATULATIONS SARASOTA MIDDLE SCHOOL ON BEING SELECTED AS THE NATIONAL SCHOOL OF CHARACTER, 2010.

Sarasota Middle School has been named Florida's Top School of Character for two years in a row 2009 and 2010.  This year they were also named a National School of Character by the Character Education Partnership in Washington D.C.

Sarasota Middle School places heavy emphasis on relationships.  One of the school site visitors from the Character Education Partnership said, "Sarasota Middle does a lot to connect with the kids."  The school motto of Nuture the Bottom, Grow the Middle, and Stretch the Top is very evident in the environment.  This philosophy allows teachers to charge students to "play with heart" and be successful socially, emotionally, and academically.  The school promotes 5 core values: caring, respect, trust, family and responsibility by making them visible in and across the curriculum.  Students have many opportunities to show leadership at Sarasota Middle School through Lunch Buddies, Panther Patrol, Coastal Cleanup, Community of Caring Committee, Students Working Against Tobacco, Student Council, NJHS, and Builder's Club. Congratulations SMS!

Please remember: No fragrance sprays or lotions of any kind are allowed at school or on a bus. Additionally, no aerosol cans or spray bottles are allowed at school or on the bus. Such perfumes, lotions, and body sprays have triggered severe asthmatic reactions from students and adults, and when a bus driver is affected it can jeopardize the safety of everyone on a bus.
